Wurster Hall Building and Room Access
All aspects of access to Wurster Hall (building and rooms) via magnetic card reader is coordinated by staff in the Student Technology Center (477 Wurster Hall, south tower), and is dependent upon your having a Cal 1 Card. (Cal1 Cards can be obtained in Lower Sproul Plaza in the ID Center.)
The magnetic card reader access system is controlled by UCB Police. The staff in the Student Technology Center will assist by setting up your access account, transmitting your information to the UC Police Department for verification, and then the Police will activate your card. This process usually takes place on the same day, but can take up to two working days.
Computer and Infrastructure Fees Explained
The computer and infrastructure aspects of CED are fee-based activities; the collection of these Miscellaneous Student Fees (MSF) are designed to cover all costs related to the service we provide. (There are no central campus or state funds available for these activities.)
What is Provided?
Your infrastructure and computing fee account provides access (and troubleshooting) to both the wired (computing labs and studios) and wireless (AirBears) networks within CED. You have access to (and we maintain) computers, printers, plotters, scanners, and specialized equipment in the computing labs and studio computing areas. You have a personal network drive space for use as backup and to save your work onto; as well as access to any space set aside for individual class use. These folders of data are regularly backed up to CED servers. All the computers we maintain will have legitimate software licenses, and will be kept current with the most recent stabilized and tested versions of software. At the same time we work to find or negotiate free software for you to download onto your computer (see the 477 Wurster Hall bulletin board for details). We are building a machine room to house a Rendering Farm you will have remote access to; and we support servers that in turn support instructional activities in the various specialized programs at CED. Additionally, your fees support the CED Help Desk system that provides a way for you to let us know when things need to be fixed.
Computer Accounts Explained
Computing accounts for students are also set up in the Student Technology Center (477 Wurster Hall), where you can obtain and fill out the necessary forms and pay the fees. The process to create computer accounts initiates your private space on the server to house your work, gives you 24/7 access to certain computer labs and computer areas in studios, and sets up a CED print account. All the other items listed above then become available.
Computer and Infrastructure Fees
Below is the chart detailing the most current computer and infrastructure and printing/plotting fees. These amounts are subject to change. Please note that the card key office can accept only the Cal1 ID/access/debit card in payment of fees. For instructions on obtaining the Cal1 Card and funding your debit account, please visit the Cal1 Card website.
