General Information

Application for admission to the College of Environmental Design (CED) is made through UC Berkeley’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The filing period for fall-semester admission is November 1 to November 30.

All prospective CED students must meet the general admission requirements defined by the University of California. Transfer applicants must also meet CED's transfer eligibility requirements (see below).

Please note that portfolios are NOT considered as part of the application process. Any portfolios sent to the University or the college will be either discarded or returned to the sender.

Advanced Placement, Advanced Level, and International Baccalaureate Credit

Freshman applicants may be eligible to receive course credit for Advanced Placement (AP) exams, Advanced Level (AL) exams, or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams taken prior to admission at UC Berkeley. For further information, including minimum scores, please consult the AP examination credit, AL examination credit, and IB examination credit tables.

Eligibility Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer students are admitted at the junior level only (90 quarter units or 60 semester units of transferable college credit) and must have completed a body of prerequisite course work relative to their chosen major.

The A.B. curricula for the undergraduate majors list the specific courses that must be taken for the degree:

Students must have completed the following requirements in the major curriculum before transfer to UC Berkeley:

  • the University and Campus Requirements, and

  • the following CED College Requirements:
    -  Essential Skills Requirements
    -  Seven-Course Breadth Requirements
    -  Environmental Design Lower-Division Requirements

The Environmental Design lower-division prerequisites (ENV DES 1, ENV DES 11A, and ENV DES 11B) are satisfied through courses taken at articulated California community colleges or accredited architecture or landscape architecture schools. Students from other schools may submit portfolios of work to receive unit credit and/or waiver of ENV DES 11A and/or ENV DES 11B. Equivalents of the University requirements, essential skills courses, and seven-course breadths may be completed at most two- and four-year institutions. More information about course equivalency may be found at www.assist.org.

NOTE: California community college students should be aware that the Inter-segmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) does not satisfy the major prerequisite requirements for the College of Environmental Design.

Applicants must have a 3.0 minimum overall grade-point average, and no grade may be below a C- in all prerequisite course work.

Change-of-College Applicants

Students registered at the University of California, Berkeley, who wish to transfer into the College of Environmental Design must wait at least one Semester from the time of their admission to Berkeley before changing colleges. The application deadlines are from the first week of the fall semester until November 1, and from the first week of the spring semester until June 1 (landscape architecture applicants must apply in the fall only for admission the following fall semester). Applicants are assessed based on their current progress toward completion of the program, ability to complete the program in the required number of semesters established by the College of Environmental Design, and overall academic performance.

Change-of-college applications may be downloaded from the Forms & Documents page (under "Change of Status").
