University Requirements

All students must fulfill three general requirements that are under the jurisdiction of the University of California rather than the College of Environmental Design.

  • Entry-Level Writing
  • American History
  • American Institutions

In addition, students must fulfill the following requirement set by the Berkeley campus:

  • American Cultures

For information about meeting these requirements, please see the General Catalog. To verify that you have satisfied each requirement, contact the Office of the Registrar, 120 Sproul Hall, (510) 643-7490.

Entry-Level Writing

Entry-Level Writing is an English proficiency requirement. If you have not fulfilled the Entry-Level Writing Requirement, you should enroll in College Writing 1A. Contact the College Writing Programs, 216 Dwinelle Annex, (510) 642-5570, for further information.

American History and American Institutions

These requirements, normally satisfied with high school courses, are designed to ensure that you have a basic understanding of U.S. history and governmental institutions. For Berkeley campus courses, contact the American History and Institutions Office, 120 Wheeler Hall, (510) 642-5006; otherwise, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 110 Sproul Hall, (510) 642-3175.

American Cultures

This requirement is designed to increase your understanding of issues pertaining to race, culture, and ethnicity in American history and society. Courses that satisfy this requirement are listed in the Schedule of Classes. Contact the Center for the Teaching and Study of American Cultures, 120 Wheeler Hall, (510) 642-2264, for further information.

Essential Skills Requirements

These courses are designed to give students the skills necessary to be successful in upper-division courses and should be taken during the freshman and sophomore years; they consist of four courses depending upon major. Requirements must be met with a minimum grade of C-.

Seven-Course Breadth Requirements

The breadth requirements form the basis of a well-rounded liberal arts education and give students the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of the Berkeley campus through the wide range of its academic departments. To fulfill the requirements, students take one course from each of the following seven categories. Note: Your major may require certain courses in these categories. Please see the course requirements for your major (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Studies) for more information.

  • Arts and Literature (language instruction excluded)
  • Biological Science
  • Historical Studies
  • International Studies (may also be satisfied by participation in the UC Education Abroad Program or a recognized equivalent program)
  • Philosophy and Values
  • Physical Science
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences

Course Search

The College of Letters and Science (L&S) offers an online tool—the L&S Seven-Course Breadth and R&C Search—for students to find courses eligible for breadth credit. PLEASE NOTE: These courses meet CED's breadth requirements with the exception of courses within the College of Environmental Design (ARCH, CY PLAN, ENV DES, LD ARCH, and VIS STD). Any CED course taken to satisfy breadth requirements will not be accepted in the evaluation of your final degree requirements.

Guidelines for Seven-Course Breadths

  • You may take one of the breadth requirements on a Passed/Not Passed basis, with the following exceptions:

    -  Architecture majors: Physical Science requirement
    -  Landscape Architecture majors: Biological Science and Physical Science requirements
    -  Urban Studies majors: Social and Behavioral Sciences requirement

These and all other breadth requirements must be met with a grade of a C-.

  • Courses must be a minimum of two units each.

  • You may not use courses numbered 98, 99, or above 190 for breadth credit.

  • Cross-listed courses may be used with the approval of your department. Please see your major advisor for guidance.

  • You may not use courses used to satisfy major requirements.

  • You may not use more than two courses from the same department.

  • Participation in the UC Education Abroad Program (or a recognized equivalent program) satisfies the International Studies requirement.

Within-CED Requirements

Students must take six courses that are within the College of Environmental Design but outside their major departments:

  • Three lower-division courses: ENV DES 1, ENV DES 11A, and ENV DES 11B; and
  • Three upper-division CED courses outside the major (9 units minimum).

All CED students may, upon approval of the Undergraduate Dean, substitute upper-division courses in environmental design fields for up to two courses in the "Within-CED" requirements area.

Major Requirements

A substantial body of required course work in the major field must be completed as specified by the departments. Please follow the links below for more information.
