Transfer Applicants

The CED undergraduate advising office holds a number of information sessions throughout the year for prospective transfer students. Meet the undergraduate advisers, learn more about the college, majors, and transfer admissions criteria, and get tips on maximizing your chances for admission. See the Student Events Calendar for session dates and to RSVP.

Prospective students are also invited to attend CED's events on Cal Day, held each year in mid-April. Tour the building, meet students and advisers, and attend information sessions about the architecture, landscape architecture, and urban studies majors. Look for information about Cal Day to be posted at the end of March.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements for Transfer Students

In addition to completing CED’s eligibility requirements (below), all prospective transfer applicants must also meet the University's minimum admission requirements for transfer students.

College of Environmental Design Eligibility Requirements

After the Office of Undergraduate Admissions reviews your application for the above minimum University requirements, the College of Environmental Design reviews your application according to college-level criteria and guidelines:

  • The UC applicant personal statement is important in the selection process at Berkeley. The college reviews the personal statement for evidence of the student's interest in the chosen field and a thoughtful match between the academic program and the student's academic and career objectives.
  • A minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average is required for consideration.
  • All courses required for admission, including breadth requirements and lower-division major requirements, must be taken for a letter grade.
  • Course work must be completed by the end of the spring term that precedes fall enrollment at Berkeley.
  • Students are not required to submit any supplemental documents beyond the UC application and essay.

For California Community College applicants only: Beginning with November 2011 applicants, students have the option of fulfilling CED's breadth requirements with the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) certification. If you are using IGETC to fulfill CED’s breadth requirements, you must have full certification. Partial certification will not complete the requirements. Be sure to check with your community college about the procedures involved in certification of IGETC. The University will require the official certification by the July 15 deadline.

For all applicants: As a transfer applicant you must complete, at a minimum, course work identified as comparable to the following UC Berkeley courses:

Architecture Majors

Lower-Division Major Requirements

  • Environmental Design 1
  • Environmental Design 11A
  • Environmental Design 11B
  • Math 16A or 1A

Landscape Architecture Majors

Lower-Division Major Requirements

  • Environmental Design 1
  • Environmental Design 11A
  • Environmental Design 11B

  • All remaining CED general education/breadth requirements

Science courses required for admission to the landscape architecture major may also be used to complete IGETC certification. Check with your community college counselor for more information.

Urban Studies Majors

Options for Completing Design Prerequisites at UC Berkeley Prior to Admission

There are several ways you may be able to complete lower-division College of Environmental Design requirements prior to admission. These can be great options for those unable to take articulated environmental design courses at a community college.

  • Lower-division College of Environmental Design courses are available to all students through UC Berkeley Summer Sessions. Typically, the college offers Environmental Design 1, 11A, and 11B during the summer. See the Summer Sessions website for more information. You can also consult the CED website for information about which environmental design courses will be offered in the summer.
  • Some prospective transfer students enroll in our lower-division College of Environmental Design courses through UC Berkeley Extension/Concurrent Enrollment. If space is available and you have permission from the course instructor and department, you can take these prerequisite courses without formal admission to the University .
  • Some community colleges have an agreement with UC Berkeley, allowing their students to enroll in a UC Berkeley course and pay community college course fees. See the UC Berkeley Office of the Registrar website for more information on the Intersegmental Cross-Enrollment program. Check with your community college counselor to see whether your school offers this option.

Applicants from Four-Year or Out-of-State Schools

If it is not possible for you to complete pre-approved lower-division environmental design courses at a California community college or at UC Berkeley through Summer Sessions or UC Berkeley Concurrent Enrollment/Extension, contact the CED undergraduate advising office for assistance. If you have completed all other lower-division major and breadth requirements, you may qualify to submit syllabi and a portfolio of work for evaluation towards satisfaction of the lower-division design prerequisites (ENV DES 1, 11A, and/or 11B).

While an official evaluation of coursework taken elsewhere will be completed after admission, we recommend that you seek an unofficial review of your coursework before you apply. Syllabi and course descriptions are required, and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. In particular, we recommend that you seek evaluation of unarticulated Reading & Composition courses and lower-division major requirements before completing your application. Please contact the CED undergraduate advising office for more information.
