Assistant Professor Andrew Shanken has contracted to write a monograph on the architecture and landscape of the 1939 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition (GGIE). The book will become part of the Berkeley|Design|Books series published by William Stout Publishers for the College of Environmental Design. Many of the illustrations will be taken from the collections in the Environmental Design Archives (EDA) while additional images will come from other local repositories. Concurrently, while conducting research for the book, he will also be developing a course with Waverly Lowell, curator of the EDA, on the more comprehensive subject of international world's fairs. Lowell, with EDA assistant curator Miranda Hambro, will also develop an exhibit for the Environmental Design Library timed to the release of the book. All of the primary sources identified for use in both the publication and class lectures will require digitization. In an archival setting this activity has a number of features that require significant staff time. The drawings and photographs will need to be identified, removed to a parallel file system, batched for scanning or camera work to the Visual Resources Center or Library Photographic Service (depending on size), and logged in and refilled when they are returned. A condition check will be required for some of the larger pastel drawings that may require conservation prior to digitization. Once the digital files are created, they will be used for publication and teaching. In addition, standard metadata will be collected and entered into a database so that the images can be added to a searchable database such as SPIRO and / or the Online Archive of California for access by students, faculty, and the research public. |
