Graduate student fellowships are necessary to recruit and retain top graduate students. With recent increases in graduate student fees, the college has lost a strategic financial advantage over our peer institutions. Undergraduate scholarships are needed to ensure that Berkeley's doors will remain open to the broadest spectrum of talented students to sustain the cultural diversity of the campus. To ensure that CED continues to educate the finest and most promising students, we plan to raise $5 million in fellowships and scholarships. Graduate Fellowship Matching Program UC Berkeley is renowned for the excellence of its graduate programs — both the National Research Council and U.S. News & World Report have called it the nation’s premier research institution. Graduate students provide a critical bridge between faculty and undergraduates, bringing fresh approaches to both the research and teaching missions of the University. Because the best faculty want to work with the best students, graduate students play a key role in faculty retention. They also make a vital academic contribution as teachers and mentors to undergraduate students. To help raise nearly $350 million in private support for graduate fellowships, the University has committed $10 million in matching funds for new fellowship endowments.
