What is the Mentorship Program?
- An opportunity for students to get one-on-one advice from professional volunteers.
- It IS NOT an internship program—there is no credit and no cost to participate.
Who can participate?
- CED students—undergraduates and graduates.
- Professionals in design, planning, and other related fields serve as mentors.
Who are the mentors?
- Volunteer professionals who graduated from CED.
- Generous professionals eager to share their knowledge and experience with students.
- Professionals in a wide range of fields including: architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, design, multimedia, and urban design.
- Professionals with experience in a range of settings including: sole practitioners, partners in large multi-disciplinary firms, public sector professionals, fine artists and designers, as well as a variety of other fields related to environmental design.
What can mentors provide to students?
- Insight into what it "really means to be a design or planning professional."
- Insight into current trends in the design professions.
- Insight regarding the range of career choices available to design students.
- Professional advice regarding resume and portfolio development.
- Advice regarding salary negotiation and interview techniques.
- Networking opportunities including introduction to professional organizations such as the AIA, APA, ASLA, AEP, and the Urban Land Institute.
How do you participate in the program?
Students
- Matching is NOT automatic—you MUST SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE!
- To Sign Up: Complete the online Student Mentorship Form or go to the CED External Relations office at 235 Wurster Hall. Ask for and complete an application.
Mentors
- Complete the online Mentor Mentorship Form or contact Christina Huang at (510) 642-5971 to volunteer as a mentor.
How does the matching of students and mentors work?
- Students who do not select a mentor will be matched.
- Matching is done by the Mentorship Committee, which is made up of alumni, staff, and students of CED.
