520 Contains student drawings, travel sketchbooks,
speeches and writings on topics such as architectural
education and the Bay Area Tradition, as well as
records of consulting projects. The bulk of the
collection consists of project files, primarily from
the 1960s, that contain specifications,
correspondence, notes, product literature, reports and
drawings. The Cannery, UC Santa Cruz and Sea Ranch
projects are particularly well-documented.
545 Joseph Esherick (1914-1998) opened his San Francisco
architectural firm in 1946 and was a major influence
on residential design in the Bay Region. His major
projects include demonstration houses at Sea Ranch,
the Cannery in San Francisco and the Monterey Bay
Aqarium. He served as Dean of the Department of
Architecture at University of California, Berkeley
from 1977-1981. A Fellow of the American Institute of
Architects, he founded the firm Esherick, Homsey,
Dodge and Davis (EHDD) and was awarded the AIA Gold
Medal in 1989.
