Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC, UKMARC,
UNIMARC)
Advantages
- Can be used for all levels: collection, project,
item
- Many pre-existing automation systems available
- Reach library audiences through local OPACS and
union databases (OCLC, RLIN)
- In a web interface, can link to on-line finding
aids and digital images
Disadvantages
- Abbreviated, particularly if used at collection
level
- Complications created by switch from AMC to MX
and VM (how do researchers limit searching, some databases having
problems with MX)
