| Return to The Old Lighthouse Return to the Gertrude Jekyll page | |
| Title: Letter to G. Jekyll from Sir W. Beardsell Project: The Old Lighthouse Date: October 2, 1925 Physical description: ink on paper Dimensions: 9 x 7 inches Note: Includes a description of the property and was sent with photographs (two are included below) and drawings (see "Scale plan of garden", "Plan of treatment of NW corner", and "Sketch of lily pond and rockery"). Beardsell makes detailed requests for the garden plan and identifies specific areas of consideration and special site issues. Despite Beardsell's request in an earlier letter that Jekyll make a site visit to personally survey the property before creating a garden plan, Jekyll adamantly did not leave her home at Munstead Wood in the later years of her life to make site visits. She relied on plans, descriptions (such as this one), and photographs sent by clients to create her garden plans. |
