  • I am an international student. May I apply to the Summer [IN]STITUTE?
  • Yes! International students are welcome to apply to the Summer [IN]STITUTE. However, to be eligible for participation, you must be issued an F-1 or J-1 visa through the U.S. Department of State. In addition to the program costs, you will be required to pay additional University fees through Summer Sessions. These additional fees are required to qualify you as a full-time student to qualify to be issued a visa. The visa application process is outlined at the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions website for international students.

  • What is the total program cost?
  • Program costs are as follows:

    Summer [IN]STITUTE Fee

    $3,400

    Summer [IN]STITUTE Application Fee (Non-Refundable)

    $75

    Total Summer [IN]STITUTE Program Cost

    $3,475

Additional fees apply through Summer Sessions enrollment. See the Summer Sessions website for their schedule of fees.

  • What is included in the cost of the program?
  • The program cost and summer session registration fees cover computer lab fees and the fabrication shop, field trips, some transportation costs, a print card, minimal supplies and a closing party to celebrate final presentations. Students must provide for their own housing, meals, any additional supplies and computer.

  • Are scholarships available?
  • Note: As of April 6, 2012, all scholarship requests have been awarded.

CED offers a limited number of student scholarships for the Summer [IN]STITUTE. The program seeks to increase the representation of candidates who have been educationally or socially disadvantaged or whose research or career direction focuses on problems related to disadvantaged segments of society. Fellowships are restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

The fellowship covers the program fee only. Each candidate must pay the applicable University fees shared in the question above.

  • How do I find housing in Berkeley?
  • You have several options for housing, some of which include meals. The following links will give you an idea of housing costs in the Berkeley area. Many summer students find sublets in the neighborhood using online listings such as Craigslist. Keep in mind that many more options become available during the summertime. Another option would be to take a room at the International House, which is a five-minute walk from the College of Environmental Design and offers meals. UC Berkeley residence halls also become available to visiting students during the summer sessions.

  • What equipment and/or materials will I need to bring?
  • All students are required to have a laptop or desktop computer. Necessary software will be shared with students on a temporary basis for the duration of the program. Students will have access to any required graphical or technical software in the college computing labs. Additionally, some drawing materials will be supplied to participants. Other supplies will be available for purchase on or near campus.

  • How does the Summer [IN]STITUTE feed into the master's programs at the College of Environmental Design?
  • The Summer [IN]STITUTE is not part of the master's programs at CED. Students who wish to apply for admission into the master's programs offered at CED must submit their applications with the general applicant pool. Please see the departmental websites for more information about admission to the master's programs in architecture, city and regional planning, and landscape architecture and environmental planning.

  • Can credit from the Summer [IN]STITUTE later be applied toward a master's degree?
  • No. Completion of the Summer [IN]STITUTE does not offer credit toward a master's degree in architecture, city and regional planning, or landscape architecture and environmental planning.

  • Am I eligible to apply for one of the Summer [IN]STITUTE programs with an undergraduate degree in that same field?
  • Because the Summer [IN]STITUTE programs are intended to be an introduction to the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning, students applying to a Summer [IN]STITUTE program area in which they already have an undergraduate degree may not find the program to be the best match for their experience. We suggest those students enroll in a more advanced program.

  • I am not eligible for the Summer [IN]STITUTE. Are there any other design courses offered during the summer?
  • Please refer to the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions website for a current catalog of courses to be offered during the summer. We also offer a series of Professional Development Workshops that offer applied-skills training through the introduction of new computer technologies and software, the development of leadership and presentation skills, and the explanation of new professional standards, regulations, and policies as well as fabrication workshops in our shop and digital tools lab.
