Photo Lab Print

The CED Photography Lab and Studio (117 and 121 Wurster Hall) is a full-service black and white wet darkroom and shooting studio.

The studio is available to all CED students. The lab supports the production of photographs for registered students currently enrolled in photography classes at UC Berkeley. The facility is also available to students, faculty, staff and alumni who are experienced in the darkroom and would like to work independently. Please Note: Permission to use the lab will be denied to anyone not abiding by the lab regulations.

All printing stops 30 minutes before closing time to allow for clean-up.

Closed on school holidays and between terms. Open during summer session. Occasionally the lab is reserved for use in the evenings by the UC Extension program. Please call ahead or stop by the lab for the latest update on the schedule.

Fees

The fee allows unlimited access to the lab during regular hours. It covers the cost of all chemistry and supports the maintenance of the lab.

Current UC Berkeley Students: $60 per term
Faculty and staff experienced in photography: $60 per term
UC Extension Students currently enrolled in Extension courses: $60

Checks should be made out to UC Regents. Please include your student ID number or Driver’s License # on the check. The lab staff will issue you a lab ID card.

Equipment

We are equipped to produce both RC and fiber-based prints up to 16"x20". The shooting studio has hot lights, backdrops, a copy stand and print finishing equipment.

We have a Mac G5, an Epson 4990 scanner and an Epson 4000 printer available for digital work. There is a sign up sheet for use of this equipment posted by the computer. You should have prior knowledge of Mac and Photoshop before signing up to use the digital facilities as there is no technical support on hand. Please contact Janet Delaney if you have not previously used this printer.

Lab Materials You Need to Provide

You will need to supply all of your own film and photographic paper. The lab supplies the chemistry for film and paper development. We use D76 for film processing and Lauders for paper processing. We use Kodak Rapid Fix for film fixing and Zonal Pro fix fast and archival fixing of paper.

We do not provide canned air. Please bring a clean hand towel. No paper towels are supplied. An apron is a stylish addition to your darkroom wardrobe. Chemistry stains…

Employment

The lab is staffed by students who have had the minimum of a college level Photo 1 course. Preference is given to work-study students. Staff work independently to manage all aspects of the darkroom including setting up chemistry, maintaining equipment and assisting students with technical questions. FAQ

How do I get into the Lab in the evenings or during weekend hours?

To have access to Wurster Hall in the evenings and weekends you can have your ID card activated in room 477 of Wurster Hall for a fee of $13. The office is open from 9-5 Monday through Friday. Please allow 3-5 days for activation of your card by the UC campus Police.

What do I need to bring to the Lab?

Please bring your own film, printing paper, hand towel, canned air, burning and dodging tools, patience and good humor. We supply the rest.

Do I have to pay the lab fee if I only want to use the shooting studio?

No, the studio is available to all CED students without charge. It is open the same hours as the darkroom.
