Fabrication Shop Print

The College of Environmental Design's fabrication shop, located in 277 Wurster Hall, primarily serves the needs of students enrolled in studio courses requiring the modeling of three-dimensional designs. The shop is also available to those CED students, faculty, and staff who have successfully completed the fabrication shop orientation and wish to work on individual projects (when traffic permits).

Shop Use Requirements

For all affiliates of CED desiring to use the fabrication shop, three requirements must be met:

1.  Payment of shop fees.

2.  Completion of the Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement.

3.  Satisfactory completion of the fabrication shop orientation and receipt of a valid access tag.

Non-Professional Degree Supplemental Tuition (Non-PDST) Students: Payment of shop fees is mandatory for each semester or summer session and is required before access may be granted. Payments can be made only at 477 Wurster Hall, and only using the Cal 1 ID/access/debit card.

Professional Degree Supplemental Tuition (PDST) Students: No payment of shop fees is necessary for fall or spring semesters; however, registration at the CED Student Technology Services Center in 477 Wurster Hall is still required.

For instructions on how to obtain a Cal 1 card and fund your debit account, please visit the Cal 1 card website, or visit 477 Wurster Hall.

Students in good standing who have attended a fabrication shop orientation session prior to the current semester are not required to attend additional sessions. For such students, ID cards may be validated for shop access by a mechanician upon payment of shop fees and completion of the Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement for the current semester. Access tags issued prior to the current term are void.

Orientations

All students and affiliates of CED desiring to use the fabrication shop must attend orientation. Sessions are offered a limited number of times at the beginning of each term. Students failing to attend orientation will not be granted access for the duration of the term. Sessions are subject to cancellation in the event of insufficient enrollment, at the discretion of the presenter. Additional orientations may be added if all scheduled sessions are filled or for the training of PDST students not enrolled in associated classes.

Please email Jamie Banes at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for information on upcoming scheduled orientation sessions.

Orientations are participatory presentations in which students will practice the techniques demonstrated. Proper attire is required. Students not appropriately dressed will be asked to leave the facility and reschedule their session. Rules for proper attire include the following:

  • Long hair must be tied back securely.

  • Open-toed shoes, flip-flops, sandals, ballerina flats, heels, or "TOMS" may not be worn. Feet must be completely covered by non-slip shoes.

  • Shorts, skirts, dresses, culottes, or capris may not be worn. Legs must be completely covered by long pants. Tights or leggings are not appropriate leg coverings.

  • Jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, and some types of earrings must be removed.

  • Headphones are not allowed in the facility. Lanyards, scarves, or ties must be removed.

  • Excessive or loose clothing must be removed. During most operations, long sleeves should be pushed up.

  • Gloves may not be worn for most operations.

  • Eye protection MUST BE WORN at all times during operations! Protective goggles are provided in the facility. Prescription glasses are NOT safety glasses! Additional eye protection must be worn over prescription eyewear.

Registered students who fail to attend their scheduled orientation may forfeit their shop fees. To withdraw from a session without penalty or to reschedule, students must return to the shop and make arrangements prior to the beginning of the session for which they are registered. Students must arrive at their session on time. Late arrivals will be refused entry and may forfeit shop fees. Additionally, early departure from a session will disqualify a student from receiving an ID access tag.

Shop Storage

Storage space in the fabrication shop is extremely limited, and students must make arrangements with shop staff to store materials. All items should be identified with the owner’s name, course number, section, and date. Any item not bearing this information is subject to removal or disposal. Materials may NOT be stored leaning against walls, stacked on floors, or in any unsafe manner. Shop staff reserves the right to remove or dispose of materials stored in this way. There is insufficient storage space for models in progress; these items must be removed from the shop daily.

A limited number of lockers near the shop entry are available for student use. Lockers are available free of charge and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may register one locker per term. Unregistered lockers are subject to disposal of contents. Lockers must be emptied by the last day of the term. To claim a locker, complete the registration form attached to the desired unit and return it to the fabrication shop office.

Fees and Refunds

What are the shop fees?

The CED Fabrication Shop is a fee-based facility participating in the PDST program, the Miscellaneous Student Fees (MSF) program and the Course Materials Fees (CMF) program for a select group of classes. These student fees are intended to cover all costs related to the services provided, as there is limited central campus or state funds available for shop activity.

What do the fees provide?

Shop fees cover the cost of: expenses (hazardous materials disposal, compliance repairs, phones, pens, etc.) and supplies (hand tools, tool accessories, glue, sandpaper, first aid, epoxy, etc.); hand-tool replacements when repair is not possible; and journeyman-level staff with specialized skills supporting CED instruction, as well as work-study student technicians.

What are the current fees?

Current fees are listed below and are subject to change. Please note that payments can be made only in 477 Wurster Hall, and only using the Cal 1 Card. For instructions on how to obtain a Cal 1 Card and fund your debit account, please visit the Cal 1 card website, or visit 477 Wurster Hall.

2011-12 Fabrication Shop Fees

MSF Fee - $105 per semester
CMF Fee* - Pending

* CMF includes items not included in the MSF such as personal protection gear, specialized materials and tool training, and access to additional supplies.

How can I get my fabrication shop fee refunded?

Details on refunds are posted outside 477 and in the Shop Policies and Rules document, which is subject to change. Refunds will not be issued in the event that students simply do not use the facility over the course of a semester.

  • MSF Refunds: These are given only if you never attended shop orientation, never used the facility, and asked for a refund within four weeks of the start of instruction.

  • PDST students are not eligible for refunds.
