Weston Havens House Print

Since its founding in 1959, the College of Environmental Design has been at the forefront of architectural and environmental innovation and creativity. The generous gift Weston Havens bestowed upon the college has enabled CED to further its educational mission to encourage the creation of meaningfully designed buildings that acknowledge their relationship with the culture, the environment, and the people who use them.

A model of integrating sustainable design, innovative technology, and a sensitivity to the lifestyle of the client and the surrounding landscape, the Havens House stands as a pioneering example of California modernist values and an inspiration for future possibilities.

Charles M. Davis, FAIA, founding partner of EHDD Architecture and recipient of the prestigious Maybeck Award from the American Institute of Architects, California Council, states the case simply: "Harwell Harris understood the ideas of light and poetry of site. Harris called it the 'Sky House,' and indeed it is. The interior light in the house is magnificent; the unique inverted trusses are a masterwork. I am really moved by this house. It needs to be restored and saved as a model of what true American architecture can be."
