Quotations

"Harris saw with prophetic clarity the exceptional fragility of contemporary regional culture. Moreover, he appreciated the extent to which it must be constantly cultivated if it is to survive, a condition that has been amply borne out by recent experience, for where can we look for true innovation today save to those places on the so-called periphery, where we may still encounter a combination of economic vitality, political independence, and cultural continuity."
— Kenneth Frampton, Ware Professor of Architecture, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, Columbia University

"To sit at one’s desk the whole day and experience the ever-changing light of the day and the distant twinkling of San Francisco nights, to look down on the clouds and see eagles fly, awakens a profound appreciation for the unique relationship that this historic house has with the Bay Area."
— Frederic Schwartz, 2009 Joseph Esherick Visiting Professor in Architecture, College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley

"What distinguishes this site is what can be seen from it: the whole of San Francisco Bay, the city on the hills, the Golden Gate, the Blue Pacific beyond, and one more thing — a marvelous sky rising from behind the ocean and disappearing behind the hills at my back. . . . The house will be not an earth house but a sky house . . . so my planning starts in the air."
— Harwell Hamilton Harris
