  • ARCH 100B. The GSI position for this course supports the teaching of the computer module. Please submit a statement describing your applicable computer expertise.

  • ENV DES 1 People and Environmental Design (Discussion Section)
    (Martin | 0–1 | 14) • Submit Application Materials
  • ENV DES 1. Students in this course begin to think graphically about the relationship between spaces, site and urban systems, and graphic representation. An ability to critique in this area is essential to success as a GSI in the course. Please include a digital portfolio of at least five examples of graphic representation in the architectural, landscape, or urban context. These can range from sketches to final presentation drawings.

  • ENV DES 11A Introduction to Visual Representation and Drawing (Studio Assistant)

  • ENV DES 11A. The primary focus of the ENV DES 11A course is freehand drawing. Please submit a digital portfolio of ten or so examples of your work in freehand drawing (e.g., still life, the figure, landscape, city scenes, building studies, etc.).

  • ENV DES 11A. The primary focus of the ENV DES 11A course is freehand drawing. The primary focus of the ENV DES 11B course is graphic representation and model building as related to the study of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and city planning. Please submit a digital portfolio of ten or so examples of your work in this area (e.g., drawings in plan, section, elevation, axonometric, and perspective, and models). A solid background in this area is crucial to teaching the course effectively.

  • [IN]ARCH 1 Introduction to Representational Media
    (Staff | 3–4 | 16) • Submit Application Materials
  • [IN]ARCH 1. GSIs will assist with teaching a range of representational methods, such as hand drawing, digital drawing, model making, and presentation organization. GSIs will participate in studio reviews and additional workshops as needed, and assist with class presentation of studio's final products. 

    Continuing graduate students in the Department of Architecture, particularly those who have taught a course in representation, and who are skilled in both digital and analogue methods of representation, are encouraged to apply.

  • [IN]ARCH 2 Fundamentals of Architectural Design — Studio

  • [IN]ARCH 2. GSIs will assist in the studio portion of the [IN]ARCH summer institute, which requires teaching architectural design methods and analysis, participating in field trips and leading class on site visits relevant to the studio topic, and assisting with organization of class presentation on studio's final products.

    Continuing graduate students in the Department of Architecture, particularly those who exhibit design excellence in their own work, or who have previously taught studio, are encouraged to apply.

  • [IN]CITY 2 Sustainability Studio
    (Frick | 4–6 | 35–40) • Submit Application Materials
  • [IN]CITY 2. GSIs will be co-instructors for the studio portion of the [IN]CITY summer institute, which requires teaching urban planning and design methods and analysis, giving media sessions, organizing field trips and leading class on site visits relevant to the studio topic, and assisting with organization of class presentation on studio's final products. GSIs also participate in teaching team for the lecture portion of the course and assist with giving lectures, holding discussion on lecture with students and assistance with lecture organization and development.

    Continuing graduate students in the Department of City and Regional Planning, particularly those who have done studio work or have taught studio, especially in urban design, architecture, and planning as well as quantitative analysis, are encouraged to apply.

  • [IN]LAND 1 Introduction to Representational Media

  • [IN]LAND 2. GSIs will assist in the studio portion of the [IN]LAND summer institute, which requires teaching architectural design methods and analysis, participating in field trips and leading class on site visits relevant to the studio topic, and assisting with organization of class presentation on studio's final products.

embARC Summer High School Program

GSI Positions

  • Architecture and Urban Design Studio
    (Suczynski/Mendez | 2 | 40) • Submit Application Materials
  • embARC Architecture and Urban Design Studio. embARC is an intensive three-week (July 16-August 3, 2012) summer design and planning academy for high school students held at the College of Environmental Design (CED). The program allows students to explore the fields of environmental design and city planning while experiencing the culture of the design/planning studio. The position is open to continuing graduate students who are in the Department of Architecture, Landscape Architecture or City and Regional Planning, particularly those who have taught a course in representation or city planning techniques, are current MUD, or dual MLA/MCP or M.Arch/MCP students, and have experience in both digital and analogue methods of representation are encouraged to apply.

    embARC GSIs will receive training in the Y-PLAN model of youth civic engagement, and will work with the course instructor to guide high school students through an authentic city planning project. GSIs will assist students with all aspects of community-based data collection. GSIs will also assist in leading a charrette process and the development of policy proposals for presentation to a panel of local policy makers and planning professionals at a final embARC presentation event.

    All qualified applicants who are being considered for the positions must be fingerprinted and successfully complete a background check.

    The GSI position will include two required meetings prior to the start of the academy: 1) a one-day training in July (date TBD) to learn the Y-PLAN methodology as part of the Center for Cities & Schools' Y-PLAN National Professional Development Institute; and 2) a one-day preparation session with the embARC course instructors and CC&S staff. Training and preparation dates will be determined prior to the end of the spring semester.

GSI Positions

  • 2012 Program: The Energy Toolbox
    (Ubbelohde/Chow | 3) • Submit Application Materials
  • Environmental Design Studio in Shanghai. CED will launch an intensive two-week (August 9–22, 2012) summer course in Shanghai entitled The Energy Toolbox that will investigate new design approaches to sustainable buildings in urban environments. This course will introduce specific software, analytical tools and design exercises that empower the designer to shape a high-performance building during the design process. The program also explores issues of climate response, daylighting, faηade design, glazing performance, building energy use, and photovoltaic sizing and orientation.

    The position is open to graduate students in the College of Environmental Design, particularly those using and teaching the following software: Rhino, Sketchup, Climate Consultant, Comfen, DIVA, THERM, EQUEST, and PVWatts. Design experience is also required. Additional energy related software skills are desirable, including EQUEST, Energy Plus, and Radiance. Previous experience as a GSI in design or technical courses is also desirable. The GSIs will receive additional training in the use and teaching of the energy toolbox, develop course materials, and assist in lectures, administration and studio teaching in Shanghai. Priority will be given to continuing graduate students, and recent graduates will also be considered.

    The GSI position will require enrolling in ARCH 298 for one credit of training and course material preparation during the summer. Training and preparation dates will be determined prior to the end of the spring semester. The course is still subject to cancellation if there is insufficient enrollment.

    Payment includes all accommodations and flights to Shanghai, a stipend for meals and transportation costs, and three weeks of salary.
