Warren T. Byrd Jr. has taught in the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia for the past 25 years. He has a bachelor's degree in horticulture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and a master's in landscape architecture from the University of Virginia. He served as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1986 through 1992 and became a full professor in 1994. He currently holds the Merrill D. Peterson Chair in the School of Architecture.

Byrd maintains a nationally recognized practice, Nelson-Byrd-Woltz Landscape Architects, based in Charlottesville, Virginia. This critical practice, which emerged out of collaborative work and competitions with Susan Nelson and several architect colleagues, has always intended to serve as an academic practice that bridges theory and application. Teaching and education are at the heart of virtually all of the work produced by the office, regardless of the site, program or clientele.

Byrd’s areas of expertise include sustainable landscape design, site planning, park planning, town planning, arboreta and botanic garden design, and specific knowledge of the landscape character and plant/ecological communities of the East Coast, especially in the mid-Atlantic region.

This event is part of the CED Spring 2010 Lecture Series. All lectures are free and open to the public.
