9 am-4 pm | Blake Garden, 70 Rincon Rd., Kensington
Tour Blake Garden, Create in the Create-with-Nature Zone

Enjoy a stroll through Blake Garden, the 10.5-acre formal gardens and landscape architecture teaching facility overlooking the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate. Make a creation with natural materials in the Create-with-Nature Zone and join the free tour at noon. Partial wheelchair accessibility. Plenty of parking. Directions are available at the information table in the Wurster Hall lobby.

Walter Hood Public Sculpture: Models+Paintings+Fabrications

Walter J. Hood, Principal, Hood Design Studio, Oakland; CED Professor of Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning and Urban Design. Professor Hood's research interests include the critical examination and development of specific urban landscape typologies for the American city. Together they reflect and reinforce specific cultural, environmental, and physical complexities of the city and neighborhood landscape. MEET THE ARTIST! Professor Hood will be available to speak with visitors at 11 a.m.

Architecture Shop Open House

This 3,000-square foot facility supporting the architecture teaching programs is equipped for model-making, woodworking, metalworking, plastics, and concrete. Join us to see students working on class projects. Safety glasses will be provided. The open house continues from 2-4 p.m.

Tour of Wurster Hall with Professor Greig Crysler, CED Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies

Join us for this personal tour of Wurster Hall with Professor Greig Crysler, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Environmental Design. Built in 1964, Wurster Hall was designed by three architecture faculty — Joseph Esherick, Vernon DeMars, and Donald Olsen — and provides a rich environment for the CED community: a world-class library, design archives, research facilities, teaching garden, computer labs, simulation and prototyping labs, fabrication shop, galleries, and a cafe. While you are touring the building, Associate Dean Crysler will answer questions about the undergraduate Architecture, Urban Studies, and Landscape Architecture programs.

Graduate Information Session in Environmental Design

Want to be an architect? Newly admitted and prospective graduate students can join us to hear a discussion of the architecture program and get answers to their questions.

College of Environmental Design: Open House, Tours, and Exhibits

Academic advisers and students will be on hand to answer questions about the undergraduate programs in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban studies and the graduate program in Landscape Architecture. Explore exhibits of student work and take a student-led tour of the CED building and design studios. Tours leave on the hour with the first tour at 11:00 and the last leaving at 3:00 pm. Student work will be displayed in cases throughout the lobbies and “A Day in the Life of a CED Student” will run continuously.

Environmental Design Library Tours

Take a self-guided tour of the College of Environmental Design library, collections, exhibits, and Internet resources. Library staff will be on hand to answer questions and Environmental Design Reference and Instruction Librarian David Eifler will lead 15-minute tours at 12, 1, and 2.

Plug-In Pavilion, Valparaíso, Chile

An exhibition of architecture professor René Davids and Master of Architecture student Taylor Medlin’s award-winning proposal to the 43rd Central Glass Architectural Design Competition, which called for “architecture coexisting with World Heritage Sites.” Their wind-powered plug-in pavilions are designed to sit atop the unique hillside elevators in Valparaíso, Chile, providing free electricity to the city’s residents while also promoting a twenty-first century urban revival. The modern architectural plans and digital conceptualizations of the pavilions, superimposed onto black and white photographs of Valparaíso, are both architecturally and aesthetically remarkable.

History and Overview of the College of Environmental Design

Please join us for an introduction to the College of Environmental Design (CED) and its vital and vibrant academic programs. Beginning his forty-four years with CED as a student the year Wurster Hall opened, Sam Davis brings his wealth of experience as student, professor, department Chair, and now Dean to this overview of the history, highlights and future of the College. CED undergraduate peer advisers will be available to answer your questions after the presentation.

Info Session for Prospective Transfer Students in the College of Environmental Design (CED)

Prospective CED Transfer students are invited to meet current CED students and advising staff, along with Ron Williams from the Transfer, Re-entry Student and Student Parent Center (TRSP). Whether you recently applied to Cal or plan to apply in the future, bring your questions about CED and about the programs and services available to transfer, re-entry, and student parents. We look forward to meeting you!
