The Berkeley Group for Architecture and Planning (BgAP)

BgAP is an incorporated group of professionals, faculty, students, alumni, and other affiliates of the University of California at Berkeley, who undertake a variety of projects on a non-profit and for-profit basis.

The NanoCity Project

In the early spring of 2007, Sabeer Bhatia teamed up with The Berkeley Group for Architecture and Planning (BgAP) to research and design NanoCity. BgAP is a consortium of professionals affiliated with the University of California at Berkeley, who collaborate on various urban policy and design challenges. A group of UC Berkeley faculty, students, and alumni made a nine-day trip to India to visit the site, study the topography and existing conditions of the land, and meet with Haryana government officials, as well as local villagers. Over the course of the next several months, the team used the findings from this fieldwork and subsequent research to inform every design decision. The result of their efforts is a city planned for the future, but on a foundation of innovation that will preserve landscape deeply rooted in the past.

The ARCH 201 Studio

Our studio is developing an urban design vision for Nano City, a development some twenty miles south of the city of Chandigarh. Students are working on ideas for infrastructure, transportation, road networks, and communication networks. The main intent is to create a livable, dense, sustainable, eco-friendly environment that can serve as a model for other developments in the region.
