The overall agenda for the class meetings
consists of seminar discussions,
project demos, guest speakers, viewing
of historical and current animations,
presentations by firms, researchers, and field trips.
Aug 29
Intro to class: Discussed animation
forms. For the fall of 2002,
the labs are situated in Rms 212 and 214. Handed out course
description
and storyboard assignment. Viewed the Electronic Theater
Siggraph 2000
'best' animations of that year. Other years will be subsequently
shown.
Sept 5
Guest: Stephen Toh, a graduated student
from last year and newly
hired by ESCFX showed and talked about his UC work and the part it
played in his demo for his application interviews. The class then
put up their
storyboards in two groups and he, Hoey Yip, TA, David Lam of the class
and myself
conducted the discussions.
Sept 12
Class started out with
Hoey Yip, TA and Dave Lam
showing and having
in depth discussions about their own work. I showed and talked about past
class animations
of the following: Kuan Chang, Ann Chen, Doris Cheung,
Edmund Lin, Ethan Swartzberg, Shams Tantawy & Tholda, Kenya Tyler, and
Eugene Wong.

Field Trip to the San Francisco
State Downtown Center at 425 Market St.
We saw demos in Anark Studio, Eyematic Face Station, Character
Studio,
and 3D Max 5.
Sept 26
Class discussion on midterm
presentations to be held on Fri & Sat, Oct 4 & 5.
Showed class
animations: Rob Booth, Sue Chang, Marcus Choi,
Mindy Commins, Natalia Khaw, Stan Lee, David Metzger, Qing
of Ching
Studios, LayWan Quan. We also revisited some previously
shown on Sept 12.
Guests: HP Duiker and Dennis
Martin from ESCFX producers of Matrix
came and told us the how and why of not being permitted to talk about
what was going on at work until film release time and of course they didn't.
'Secrecy in
Action'. They answered questions all around the 'obvious' and
reassured us they would return with examples and explanations once the
Matrix movies were released.

gave a lengthy lecture on his digital rendering for the many clients
he has. This year most of his work is 2D of unbelievable

Robots
John
Vegher, Peter Oberdorpher, and Mike Schmidt founded Giant Killer
Robots, 'a high end, high res CGI company. John, an UC Arch grad
came
to speak to us and told us what it was like to expand from five to
fifteen
people. Their work has been represented by Manhattan
Transfer,
Rocket Science Games, Wild Brain, 20th C Fox, Manex, etc, etc.

Professor
Lieu gave a presentation showing ' advanced, 3 D graphics tools
for engineering design. Wire frame, surface and solids modeling,
boundary
representation, constructive solids, sweeping, rotationn, Boolean
operations.
Computer rendering, viewing, and presentation of solids using computer
animation and multimedia techniques.' The work was extraordinary.

Lee gave a detailed discussion of two 'dot.com' companies in which he

been deeply involved: in the past Design Reactor; and now
