Berkeley without shadow

Downtown Berkeley through a Panoramic View

by Aaron Lui

Downtown Berkeley acts as the urban center of the city and represents its major business and transportation networks. A wide variety of restaurants, bars, and shops fill the street level storefronts along Shattuck Ave. These businesses, set in a mix of modern and historic architecture, are the backdrop for busy pedestrian street scenes. Culturally, Berkeley is iconic for its liberal political ideology. The strongly held belief in saving the past through historical preservation and in calling for change with occasional protests gives Downtown Berkeley its distinctive façade.

The panoramic view offers an expansive way of seeing Downtown Berkeley. Rather than traditional single frame photography, a panorama can ground the subject to its landscape more effectively. One compromise is evident in some of the images: occasionally straight lines may appear curved. This warped effect gives panoramas an added signature. A panoramic view of Downtown Berkeley gives the subjects added context and illuminates its exceptional personality.
