Berkeley without shadow

A Reason

by Justin Syren

So why did I make these photographs? Because why not. Why is it strange to talk with a stranger on the street? Why are we living our lives so distantly from each other? To call these things I’ve made photographs is to betray what they are. They are documents of an interaction between two people. The camera was simply a mediator—an excuse to talk to somebody I probably would never have talked to. In this way a photograph becomes not the voyeuristic and invading document we have made it into, but a beautiful expression of a random moment of joy between two strangers in Downtown Berkeley.
