Berkeley without shadow

Nighttime

by Michael Zhang

Every evening, as the sun, storeowners and panhandlers retire for the night, Downtown Berkeley dons a new mask.

Open doors that once ushered pleasing aromas onto the sidewalk are now closed, allowing only a glimpse of the empty tables and inverted chairs within.

The hustle and bustle of downtown seems briefly to quicken, as pedestrians flee the chilly breezes and perceived danger that arrives with the onset of darkness.

Parents cling tightly to their children, as fewer people walk the streets alone. Taxi drivers enter their vehicles to begin their night shifts, and homeless people wander in search of a place to sleep.

Though Downtown Berkeley has a vibrant nightlife, most people are tucked away safely behind the four walls of various venues, and out of public view.
