Lecturer Positions in Architecture - Spring 2008

We invite applications for lecturer positions in our curricular sub-areas for the Spring 2008 semester. Applications must include a curriculum vitae, a non-returnable portfolio or samples of work not to exceed 12 pages, and at least two letters of recommendation. The material submissions may be either hard copy or digital. All applications must be submitted by October 15, 2007. Submissions will be kept on file for review for two years.

Lecturer Policy

Lecturers supplement the instructional capability of our program, enriching the breadth of our offerings in both graduate and undergraduate education. Lecturers bring expertise not available from our regular faculty, substitute for regular faculty on leave, and most importantly, bring new voices and experiences to the design studio component of the curriculum.

Lecturer selection is determined by departmental needs for each academic year. A faculty committee reviews applications to match these needs with the qualifications of the applicants. A rank-ordered list of qualified applicants is recommended to the department chair, who then makes appointments in consultation with the faculty in specialty areas or with coordinating design faculty.

Lecturer appointments typically are short term; the policy for reappointment can be obtained from the department. You will be contacted by Mary Comerio, Chair, if you have been selected.

Faculty Position in Digital Design - Search Extended

The Department of Architecture, University of California at Berkeley, is now conducting a search for qualified applicants for a full-time position in Digital Design. This position is open at the tenure track level (Assistant Professor). The appointment may begin in Fall 2008.

The Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley has a strong tradition of fostering independent design thinking and research. Our award-winning faculty offers vigorous undergraduate and graduate educational programs and carries out leading-edge research in constructed and virtual environments, architectural science and technologies and architectural humanities. The Department of Architecture provides instruction to 650 undergraduates, and 150 graduate students in the M Arch, MS and PhD programs. 

Responsibilities include studio instruction at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as seminar, lecture and/or workshop courses, with a focus on design and computational technologies (fabrication, simulation, information modeling and representation, etc.). Responsibilities also include working with and advising undergraduate, M Arch and MS/PhD students. Applicants should hold a Master of Architecture, PhD, or an equivalent advanced post-professional degree in architecture with experience teaching at the university level, practice and/or research, and a demonstrated ability to publish and disseminate the outcome of their work. Successful candidates should demonstrate their understanding of and experience in the use of digital methods and technologies in the conceptualization, design, analysis and communication of the built and/or imagined environment. Special attention will be given to candidates who can contribute to architectural theory, criticism, social and cultural research, and design practice.

This position represents an opportunity to impact pedagogy in both the studio and the classroom and shape the study of architecture in the future. The department intends to add faculty with a commitment to innovative thinking and collaboration. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate outstanding scholarship, effective teaching, excellent communication skills, and collegiality. Service to the department, university, and the greater community is an important aspect of this appointment.

Berkeley Maybeck Fellowship

The Department of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, established the Maybeck Fellowship in 2005 to give promising individuals near the beginning of their teaching career an opportunity to pursue academic and teaching interests. We invite applications for a one-year appointment in the 2008-09 academic year.

The Fellow will teach three courses per academic year: two undergraduate design studios and a graduate seminar related to his or her research/creative work. Research must include topics connected to informing design work. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the college and engage in critical, theoretical, and/or creative work. This work will be presented through a public lecture, exhibition, and/or lectures in existing classes.

Candidates must have a Master of Architecture degree and a record of accomplishment in design commensurate with their experience. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, statement of research interest including a seminar proposal, a non-returnable portfolio, contact information, and names of three references.
