Application Components

Components marked with an asterisk (*) must be uploaded in digital (.pdf) form to the Architecture Candidate Registration webpage.

1. University Application and Fee

The University Graduate Division online application (includes Statement of Purpose, History Statement, and self-reported GRE or TOEFL score) and application fee ($70 for U.S. citizens or current permanent residents, $90 for all others) must be submitted online by the December 17, 2009, application deadline. The department does not accept paper applications.

2. Official Transcript(s): Digital* and Paper Formats

Obtain 2 sets of official transcripts from all post-high-school educational institutions attended (whether or not a degree was earned). Mail one set of official transcripts to the Department of Architecture:

Department of Architecture
University of California, Berkeley
370 Wurster Hall #1800
Berkeley, CA 94720-1800

Convert the other set to digital (.pdf) format, removing your Social Security number and birth date in the process, and upload to the Architecture Candidate Registration webpage.

3. Three Letters of Recommendation (Digital Format)

Submit online via the University graduate application.

4. One Standardized Exam: GRE or TOEFL

Domestic applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). School code is 4833; department code is 4401. The GRE must be taken by the middle of November. GRE scores are valid for five years. There is no minimum required score.

Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) instead of the GRE. School code is 4833; department code is 12. TOEFL scores are valid for two years. Minimum scores: 570 for the paper-based test; 230 for the computer-based test; and 68 for the internet-based test (iBT). As a substitute to the TOEFL, applicants may take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. Minimum score is 7 on a 9-point scale. Please provide the department with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS.

5. Grade-Point Average (GPA) Sheet* (if applicable)

Download GPA calculator spreadsheet [.xls]

U.S. Students: Please calculate your grade-point average on degree coursework taken after the first two years of undergraduate study (do not include in the GPA calculation the first two years of undergraduate coursework or coursework taken after degree completion). If your degree institution did not assign letter grades or used a different grading system than the 4.0 letter-grade scale, do not complete the form. The University requires a minimum grade-point average of 3.0, B, or equivalent. Upload completed GPA sheet to the Architecture Candidate Registration webpage.

International Students: GPA sheet not required.

6. Resume*

Include professional work, teaching experience, awards, publications, relevant volunteer/public services activities, etc. Upload in digital (.pdf) form to the Architecture Candidate Registration webpage.

7. Digital Portfolio*

All M.Arch applicants are required to submit a 12-page digital portfolio of design work. Portfolios are judged both on content and overall design. Applicants with no architectural training may submit work showing other evidence of creativity (studio art, construction/renovation, furniture design, etc.) that makes a clear demonstration of interest in the design field. Anything submitted that is not entirely the applicant’s own work must be clearly identified.

Formatting Requirements: Portfolio files must be in PDF format and no larger in size than 10 MB. Please note: The upload server will reject your file if it is even slightly larger than 10 MB. See below for tips on file compression. If you have tried compressing your file and it is still larger than 10 MB, you may break up the file and upload it in multiple PDF files. However, for viewing purposes the admissions committee prefers that your portfolio be a single document.

File names must be all lower-case, must use only the characters a-z, 0-9, and hyphen ("-"), and must be in the following format: "portfolio", then your last name, then your first name, then a multiple-file sequence number (only if you are uploading multiple files), then the ".pdf" extension. Separate each with an underscore character ("_"). File-naming examples:

Single-File Portfolios

portfolio_smith_jane.pdf

Multiple-File Portfolios

portfolio_smith_john_1.pdf
portfolio_smith_john_2.pdf

Note: You may upload a new version of your portfolio as long as you do it before the upload deadline and the file name remains exactly the same as the previously uploaded file. You may need to clear your browser cache to upload the new version of the file.

File Compression. If your portfolio exceeds 10 MB, try compressing it in Adobe Acrobat. Open the file in Acrobat; under the "Advanced" tab on the menu bar, select "PDF Optimizer." Set all "pixels/inch" numbers to 100 or less and click "OK." You can find more information about optimizing PDF files at this Website Optimization link.

Confirmation of Submittal

The University Graduate Division will send you a confirmation email after you submit the online graduate application.

Please bear in mind that due to the quantity of applications the Department of Architecture processes, it is difficult for the Graduate Office to answer individual inquiries regarding application status. We request that you verify receipt of application materials on the Architecture Candidate Registration webpage. Notification of Acceptance

Unofficial application decisions are emailed to applicants by the end of March. Applicants who have been recommended for admission are notified by the Graduate Division by the end of April. Only the written notice of the Dean of the Graduate Division constitutes approval of admission. Correspondence with the department or with individual faculty members, no matter what the content, does not commit the University to an approval of admission.
