MCP Core Curriculum Print

Every MCP student must complete the core curriculum as follows:

1.  History and Theory Requirement: Students must complete at least one of the following courses:

  • CY PLAN 200: History of City Planning (Fall, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN 281: Theories of Planning Practice (Spring, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN 282: Planning and Governing (Fall, 3 units)
     

2.  Methods Requirement: Students must complete a minimum of 6 units from the following courses:

  • CY PLAN 204A: Methods of Planning Data Analysis (Fall, 2 or 4 units)
  • CY PLAN 204B: Research Methods for Planners (Spring, 2 or 4 units)
  • CY PLAN 204C: Introduction to GIS and City Planning (Spring, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN 204D: Multivariate Analysis in Planning (Spring, alternate years, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN 209: Methods of Negotiation and Collaborative Planning (Spring, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN C241: Research Methods in Environmental Design (Spring, 4 units)
  • CY PLAN 255: GIS for City and Regional Planners (Spring, 3 units)
     

Note: All students must take the first two units of CY PLAN 204A.

3.  Institutions Requirement: Students must complete at least one of the following courses:

  • CY PLAN 205: Introduction to Planning and Environmental Law (Fall, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN 206: Planning Institutions and Organizations (Spring, 3 units)
     

4.  Economics Requirement: Students must complete at least one of the following two courses:

  • CY PLAN 207: Urban Economics for Planners (Spring, 3 units)
  • CY PLAN C234: Housing and the Urban Economy (Fall, 3 units)
     

Note: Students who have not previously taken an undergraduate microeconomics course may petition the MCP Program Committee to complete this requirement by taking CY PLAN 113A.

5.  CY PLAN 290: Professional Report/Client Report/Thesis Workshop

  • CY PLAN 290C: PR/CR/Thesis Workshop (Spring, 1 unit) (normally students' second semester)
  • CY PLAN 290B: PR/CR/Thesis Workshop (Fall, 1 unit) (normally students' third semester)
     

6.  Studio Requirement: Students will complete at least one studio or workshop from the following list:

  • CY PLAN 208: Plan Preparation Studio (Spring, 5 units)
  • CY PLAN 218: Transportation Workshop (Fall, 4 units)
  • CY PLAN 228: Regional & Economic Development Planning Workshop (alt. years, 4 units)
  • CY PLAN C233: Shaping the Public Realm (Fall, 5 units)
  • CY PLAN 238: Affordable Housing & Neighborhood Development Studio (Fall, 4 units)
  • CY PLAN 248: Advanced Studio: Urban Design and Environmental Planning (Fall, 5 units)
  • CY PLAN 268: Community Development Policy Workshop (Spring, 4 units)
  • LD ARCH 205: Environmental Planning Studio (Spring, 4 units)
     

Note: For many concentrations, students will be able to satisfy the core studio requirement by taking a studio course as part of their concentration requirement.
