CED SPECIAL EVENT - Creating 21st Century Sustainable Neighborhoods

How do we create zero-carbon self-sustaining neighborhoods? Focusing on pioneering work in China and the landmark "Treasure Island Master Plan," a distinguished panel of experts will present the challenges of integrating all the elements -- people, buildings, open space, transportation, energy, water, waste and natural forces -- into a whole-systems approach to designing compact, transit-oriented, sustainable communities.

Panelists: Harrison S. Fraker, dean of CED, Berkeley and the William W. Wurster Professor of Architecture and Urban Design; Craig W. Hartman, FAIA, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill design partner; and Dr. Jean Rogers, ARUP senior consultant The event begins with a reception at 5:30 pm and the program begins at 6 pm.

Tickets are free for Commonwealth Club members, $15 for non-members and $7 for students with valid ID. Purchase tickets online at the Commonwealth Club website. Students must call (415) 597-6705 to reserve tickets.

SPARK AWARDS - Deadline is March 15, 2008

The Spark Awards is a new design competition -- for designers, art directors, architects, design firms, manufacturers, institutions, ad agencies, students and novices -- and individuals and companies are invited to submit entries in graphics, mobility design, product, transportation and architecture, among others.
