CED LECTURE SERIES
Katherine Rinne: Water's Flow and the City of Rome
October 17, 2011 | 6:30PM | 112 Wurster Hall, University of California, Berkeley, CA
|
Using Rome as a case study, this Katherine Rinne (M.Arch '81) explores social, cultural, aesthetic, topographic, technological, and political changes that the construction of water infrastructure engenders in the city as it spurs urban development. Rome provides a compelling model for increasing our understanding of how cities function and evolve over time as access to fresh water increases, diminishes, or disappears.
Katherine Rinne teaches advanced level architecture/urban design studios and seminars at California College of the Arts. Author of The Waters of Rome: Aqueducts, Fountains, and the Birth of the Baroque City (2011 Yale University Press), her independent research on water infrastructure has garnered numerous awards and fellowships.

|
Professors Louise Mozingo (Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and Urban Design) and Richard Walker (Geography) discuss the social-historical, economic, ecological, and environmental contexts of the 1991 Oakland-Berkeley Fire in the first of several public conversations associated with the exhibition 1991: The Oakland-Berkeley Fire Aftermath, Photographs by Richard Misrach. The exhibition features elegiac and dramatic images of the 1991 Oakland-Berkeley Fire by renowned Bay Area photographer Richard Misrach, who for two decades kept the photographs in storage out of respect for the victims of the inferno. To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the 1991 Oakland-Berkeley Fire, BAM/PFA and the Oakland Museum of California each present forty photographs from Misrach's collection. 1991: The Oakland-Berkeley Fire Aftermath is on view at the Berkeley Art Museum October 12, 2011-February 5, 2012.

Aerial Photographer Barrie Rokeach Takes Flight, Receives Recognition
Barrie Rokeach—a CED Distinguished Alumnus in 2008—was one of six
photographers featured at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, China, in
July 2011. The exhibit, “Bridging the Ocean, Bridging the Bay,” showcased
the work of the photographers documenting the fabrication and construction of the new East Span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, which incorporates the world’s largest self-anchored suspension bridge.
Rokeach was represented by 20 large aerial photographs in both the exhibit and a companion exhibit catalog. Moreover, Rokeach’s aerial photograph of the erection of the tower section of the new span appeared on the cover of
the catalog. A commercially rated instrument pilot who flies and shoots at the same time, Rokeach has been documenting the ongoing construction of the bridge from the aerial perspective for several years.
