CEDR COLLOQUIUM - Can You Say 2007?, Doug Aitken

Doug Aitken is an American multimedia artist. His body of work ranges from photography, sculpture, and architectural interventions to sound, single- and multichannel video works, and installations. He has said that his global travel and contemporary nomadic existence informs his work and that he aims to fuse travel and the idea of movements into daily experience. Aitken's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, in such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. IURD VISITING SCHOLARS ROUNDTABLE - Public Transportation in Post-Bureaucratic

David Booher is the Senior Policy Advisor at the Center for Collaborative Policy at California State University Sacramento. Many scholars have explored the changing nature of planning bureaucracy where the goals of efficiency, control, and central direction are increasing being superseded by the need to deal with uncertainty, rapid change, and fragmentation. This evolution has potentially profound implications for public participation and civil society. Booher will discuss some of the lessons from his research and experiences in assisting public agencies in the midst of dealing with this change. LAEP COLLOQUIUM - Planning for Urban Wildlife, Shannah Anderson + Kathryn Gaffney

Shannah Anderson is an Associate Research Specialist for the Center for Environmental Design Research at UC Berkeley, where she manages the California node's collaboration in the National River Restoration Science Synthesis and lectures for the Environmental Sciences Dept. She is also a Commissioner on the Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee. Kathryn Gaffney is an environmental specialist and program manager with Jones & Stokes' Water Resources Team. Kathryn's work in permitting has included developing permit application packages for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Fish and Game, and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board. LAEP LECTURE - Landscape: The New Architecture, Gary Strang

Gary Strang has proposed that "in the future, buildings will dissolve into the landscape and nature will be constructed." He is the founder of GLS, an eight-person, multi-disciplinary office in San Francisco whose mission is to integrate landscape with infrastructure and urban architecture. GLS has received ASLA National Honor Awards for the recently completed Units 1 & 2 Residence Halls at UC Berkeley and the Beth Israel Chapel and Cemetery in Houston. In conjunction with the design of the Student Athlete High Performance Center and the Law and Business Schools' Connection Building, the University of California at Berkeley has undertaken a master plan for the area bounded by the east edge of California Memorial Stadium, Bancroft Street, The Haas School of Business and College Way. Undertaking a broader, more comprehensive vision that extends beyond any one particular capital project is a new venture for the UCB administration and Olin Partnership was charged with developing a framework into which these two specific projects and several others might be developed. READYMADE BLOG: Ideas from the SF Garden Show March 25.

Students from Berkeley 's Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning presented "Wine Re-Defined," a demonstration garden built entirely of materials from the wine industry. The team (consisting of: Sutter Wehmeir, Leslie McKenna, Mike Herrin, Mandy Leung, Caleb Clark, Ingrid Stromberg, and John Martin) won the Gold Medal from the guest judges (Mario Schjetnan, Fergus Garret, Steve Martino). The garden, displayed at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, drew raves from the ReadyMade Blog.

Right: The lights were made from recycled wine bottles and hung on what appears to be a simple cord. The bottom of each bottle was cleanly removed, and the glass was polished.

On March 30, a team of UC Berkeley students were announced winners of the fifth annual ULI (Urban Land Institute) Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition. This was a two-step competition that stretched over several months. In the first phase, the UC Berkeley team was one of four selected out of 100 entries. The first site was a stretch of downtown Los Angeles along the LA River. In the second phase, they were asked to zero in on several blocks close to the Japanese American National Museum and MOCA. They beat out two Harvard teams and a team from the University of Illinois to win, and according to one team member, "had way more fun than any other team in the process." The winning team's school will receive $5,000, and the team members will split $45,000 amongst themselves.

The winning team includes: Andrea Gaffney (MLA/MCP), Chris Lollini (MCP/Civil Engineering), Robert McCracken (MCP), Aditi Rao (MCP/Arch), Brooke Ray Smith (MLA/MCP).
