SPECIAL EVENT - The Purple Onion presents Gyöngy Laky

CED alumna Gyöngy Laky will be interviewed at The Purple Onion's "Talk Show Live," a monthly event in which comedian Kurt Bodden interviews interesting locals in front of a live audience. Laky, a textile artist and sculptor who recently retired from teaching at UC Davis, had her work exhibited at the Braunstein/Quay gallery in San Francisco last month. Laky will be interviewed along with Qi Spirits co-founder Brian Backus and actor/writer/producer Jeffrey Hartgraves. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased online here.

SPECIAL EVENT - Green Developer Series: Webcor Builders

Hosted by the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and the Presidio School of Management, the Green Developer Series will welcome Phil Williams and Todd Lukesh, vice president and sustainability engineer, respectively, of Webcor Builders. They will be speaking about the challenges and rewards of the California Academy of Sciences project, provide insight into how Mayor Gavin Newsom's Green Building Taskforce will change the city, and discuss how Webcor's full embrace of sustainability is proving advantageous in today's tight economy. This event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is recommended as space is limited.

SPECIAL EVENT - The Tennessee Valley Authority: Design and Persuasion

A free discussion and book signing with Tim Culvahouse, FAIA, editor, and Barry Katz, industrial design historian and author. In the wake of the Great Depression, one of Franklin Roosevelt's most successful New Deal programs was the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Through the federally -owned corporation, the TVA Architects Office built a vast number of structures throughout the late 1930s and 1940s that worked to revitalize the Tennessee River Valley and, arguably, created one of the most technologically sublime bodies of modernist architecture in North America. Join Tim Culvahouse and Barry Katz in conversation with Kenny Caldwell as they explore the technical, political, aesthetic, and cultural elements at play during this forgotton chapter of modern American architecture and design. Call for entries- EDRA/Places Awards 2008- Deadline is February 7, 2008

The 2008 EDRA/Places Awards, in cooperation with Metropolis magazine, celebrate excellent places and how people inhabit them. Awards recognize superior design, planning, research, and -- new this year -- outstanding books. Jurors will include Dennis Frenchman, MIT professor of urban design and planning; Leanne Rivlin, CUNY professor in the environmental psychology doctoral program; Fritz Steiner, dean of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture; Susan S. Call for abstracts - 2008 IASTE Conference - Deadline is February 15, 2008

The 11th Conference of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments, part of CED's Center for Environmental Design Research, will be held in Oxford, United Kingdom from December 12 to 18, 2008 on the theme Interrogating Tradition: Epistemologies, Fundamentalisms, Regeneration, and Practices. CED Berkeley New York Lecture Series - Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Grey Matters

Mark your calendar and join us for this event, part of a series of lectures hosted at the Center for Architecture in downtown New York City, home to the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Associate Professor of Architecture teaches studio and seminar courses on the theory and practice of design. In January 2005, Raveevarn re-invented a new independent practice. Veev, based in San Francisco, which focuses on contemporary issues and discourse through experimentation with the performative possibilities of materials and the incorporation of elements from various types of media. SPARK AWARDS - Deadline is March 15, 2008

The Spark Awards is a new design competition -- for designers, art directors, architects, design firms, manufacturers, institutions, ad agencies, students and novices -- and individuals and companies are invited to submit entries in graphics, mobility design, product, transportation and architecture, among others. Creating 21st Century Sustainable Neighborhoods at the Commonwealth Club, 10 December 2007
CED Dean Harrison S. Fraker, Jr., along with Jean Rogers and Craig Hartman, spoke at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco last month about how to create modern, sustainable neighborhoods, China and the landmark Treasure Island Master Plan at an event called "Creating 21st Century Sustainable Neighborhoods."
