SPECIAL EVENT - City of the Future opening reception, panel discussion and exhibition

February 6 . | . 7-9:30 p.m. . | . The Nave, California College of the Arts, San Francisco campus

An opening reception and panel discussion will honor CED associate architecture professor Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott, a CCA faculty member and her partner at IwamotoScott Architecture, who won $10,000 and beat out eight other teams in City of the Future, a competition to envision how San Francisco should look 100 years from now. The opening reception and panel discussion is Feb. 6 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Their winning entry is on display at the California College of the Arts-San Francisco campus until Feb. 15; the exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The contest, sponsored by the History Channel and IBM, names one winning team each from San Francisco, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.; Iwamoto and Scott will face off with the other top two teams this month in an online public voting contest to name the national winner.

SPECIAL EVENT - Davidoff Recipients Reception and Book-Signing

Please join the Center for Community Innovation and the College of Environmental Design for a reception and book-signing in honor of Landscape Architecture Professor Randy Hester and City and Regional Planning Assistant Professor Jason Corburn, who both won the 2007 Paul Davidoff Award for their books, Design for Ecological Democracy (2006, MIT Press) by Randy Hester and Street Science: Community Knowledge and Environmental Health Justice (2005, MIT Press) by Jason Corburn.
The Paul Davidoff Award is presented by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning biennially and is one of the most prestigious honors in the academic planning field. For more information about the awards, please visit this site.

LAEP COLLOQUIUM - Randy Poole, The Sonoma County North American Climate Initiative

ARCH LECTURE - Neil Spiller, Towards a Reflexive and Pataphysical Architecture

Neil Spiller, an architect; professor of architecture and digital theory; director of Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research Group, and vice dean of the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College in London, will speak on his research into the connections between architecture and cyberspace.

ARCH SPECIAL EVENT- Branner Traveling Fellows Opening Reception

February 20 . | . 7-8:30 p.m. . | . 112 and 108 Wurster Hall, UC Berkeley

A reception to honor Branner Traveling Fellowship recipients Andrew Ballard, Yukiko Bowman and Ivan Valin. The John K. Branner Traveling Fellowship is open to Master of Architecture students at the College of Environmental Design. The prize amount is $25,000 each awarded to between three and six students for a 12-month fellowship to be used during or before the final year in the M.Arch. program. Students must explore a particular architectural question or issue that may later be expanded as a thesis, and France and Italy must be included in the itinerary.
A lecture will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a reception at 8:30 p.m. The exhibit will remain open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 108 Wurster Hall until March 2. For more information about the fellowships and this year's recipients, visit this site.

CED Berkeley New York Lecture Series - Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Grey Matters

Mark your calendar and join us for this event, part of a series of lectures hosted at the Center for Architecture in downtown New York City, home to the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Associate Professor of Architecture teaches studio and seminar courses on the theory and practice of design. In January 2005, Raveevarn re-invented a new independent practice. Veev, based in San Francisco, which focuses on contemporary issues and discourse through experimentation with the performative possibilities of materials and the incorporation of elements from various types of media. CED associate architecture professor Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott, her partner at IwamotoScott Architecture, won $10,000 and beat out eight other teams in City of the Future, a competition to envision how San Francisco should look 100 years from now. The San Francisco Chronicle's John King writes about the competition and the competitors, which, in addition to Iwamoto, included CED associate architecture professor Mark S. Anderson; CED alumna Anne Fougeron, M.Arch '80; and CED alumnus Peter Pfau, B.Arch '80.

CED alumnus named recipient of AIA Lifetime Achievement Award
Peter Dodge, B.Arch '56, FAIA, has been named the 2008 recipient of the American Institute of Architects, California Council's Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the improvement of the built environment and the architectural profession, as well as for contributions to the lives of clients and citizens served by the profession.
After graduating from UC Berkeley, Dodge joined Joe Eshericks, FAIA, practice in 1956 and launched a professional journey that would touch the lives of countless individuals. Dodge was named a principal in 1972 and played a significant role in the growth of Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis (EHDD) Architecture, a San Francisco firm identified with design excellence. By the end of his term as principal in 1997, the firm had grown from 30 to 80 architects and had developed complex programs for prominent commercial and institutional clients. To date, Dodge contributes to the firm as a consulting founding principal and maintains his office at the firms headquarters.
Always dedication to architecture education, Dodge twice co-founded UC Berkeleys architecture alumni association, first in 1981 and then again in 1990 when the disbanded association was re-created under the College of Environmental Design. Dodge served as the organization's first president from 1981 to 1984.
