ARCH LECTURE - Branner Traveling Fellows Presentation

Attend a reception and lecture by 2007 Branner Traveling fellows Andrew Ballard, Yuki Bowman, and Ivan Valin. The John K. Branner Traveling Fellowship is open to master of architecture students at the College of Environmental Design. The prize amount is $25,000 each awarded to between three and six students for a 12-month fellowship starting in December, to be used during or before the final year in the M.Arch. program. Students must explore a particular architectural question or issue that may later be expanded as a thesis. France and Italy must be included in the itinerary. CED Berkeley New York Lecture Series - Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Grey Matters

Mark your calendar and join us for this event, part of a series of lectures hosted at the Center for Architecture in downtown New York City, home to the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Raveevarn Choksombatchai, Associate Professor of Architecture teaches studio and seminar courses on the theory and practice of design. In January 2005, Raveevarn re-invented a new independent practice. Veev, based in San Francisco, which focuses on contemporary issues and discourse through experimentation with the performative possibilities of materials and the incorporation of elements from various types of media. LAEP Lecture - Dianne Harris, Suburbia Interrupted: Levittown, Pennsylvania

Join Diane Harris, a landscape history professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, for a lecture. Her publications include the co-edited volume Villas and Gardens in Early Modern Italy and France (Cambridge University Press, 2001), and she is the author of The Nature of Authority: Villa Culture, Landscape, and Representation in Eighteenth-Century Lombardy (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2003) which won the Elisabeth Blair MacDougall Award from the Society of Architectural Historians in 2006. She is also the author of Maybeck’s Landscapes: Drawing in Nature (William Stout Publisher, 2005). In addition to a co-edited volume (with D. Fairchild Ruggles) entitled Sites Unseen: Landscape and Vision (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2007). For more information, visit here.

ARCH Lecture - Gregg Pasquarelli , Out of Practice

Join Gregg Pasquarelli for an evening about technology and practice. Pasquarelli, a co-founder of SHoP in Manhattan, New York, believes in the company's motto "Use technology to build practice, see practice as technology." His office has grown from five employees to 70 in the past 10 years. He holds a bachelor's degree from the Villanova University School of Business and a master of architecture degree from Columbia. He has taught architecture at Yale, the University of Virginia, and Columbia. He is a registered architect in the state of New York. For more information about SHoP, visit its Web site here.

LAEP Lecture - Ethan Carr, Modernism and the National Parks: Mission 66

Ethan Carr is a landscape historian and preservationist specializing in the public landscapes of the United States. He is the author of Wilderness by Design (1998, University of Nebraska Press) and Mission 66: Modernism and the National Park Dilemma (2007, Library of American Landscape History with University of Massachusetts Press). Carr formerly served as the New York City park historian and as a National Park Service landscape architect. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and is editing the eighth volume of the Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted. UC Berkeley's Center for Community Innovation is featured in a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report for its work in the East Bay. Executive Director Karen Chapple and Director Heather Hood, along with some of the center's partners, are quoted.

Spring Home Design by Zahid Sardar, San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, 10 February 2008
San Francisco Chronicle design editor Zahid Sardar writes about three architect's homes, including CED supporter Richard Beard's modern Edwardian. Beard says in the story that one of his architectural heroes is William Wurster, the first CED dean. Also featured is the work of CED Environmental Design Archives donor Joshua Aidlin of Aidlin Darling Design and Christy Azevedo, B.Arch. '92. To read the two stories, click here and here.

REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to deal with highly complex projects and
multidisciplinary teams. Candidates should have a minimum of 3 to 6 years of experience with mid- to large-scale
commercial, institutional, academic, and urban-planning projects with an added focus in sustainability planning
strategies. They must be proficient in a variety of design visualization tools, including freehand and 2D and 3D
techniques (Form-Z is a plus). Qualitative and quantitative analysis skills are necessary.
This position requires a degree from an accredited architecture or design school. Professional licensing in the
design field and/or master's degree is preferred. Candidates should possess working knowledge of building
codes, standards, building systems, and LEED guidelines with a proven ability to monitor project tasks.
Candidates must be able to clearly communicate in writing, graphics, and public presentations. In addition, you
should be capable of working efficiently in both individual and team settings.
