SPECIAL EVENT - Reception and Dedication of the new CED Distinguished Alumni Lounge

The newly completed CED Distinguished Alumni Lounge, on the 2nd floor of Wurster Hall, is ready for its public debut. Designed by Ratcliff, the Alumni Lounge has a sleek, minimalist, yet welcoming appearance. Steel plates envelop the space to distinguish its setting as well as create a feeling of intimacy. The lounge also features a large plasma screen television set that will display interactive material about the distinguished alumni, student projects, and what’s new at the college. A wall with the names of Distinguished Alumnus Award recipients etched into it encloses the lounge.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - California magazine's Eureka project

UC Berkeley's alumni magazine, California, is calling for submissions for its Eureka Project. Anyone can submit any idea that was hatched on any of the 10 UC campuses for consideration into a compilation of California's 100 best ideas ever. A panel of experts will narrow the submissions down to the final 100, which will be featured in multimedia presentations and at a spring 2009 museum exhibit in Sacramento. For more information or to submit an idea, visit the project's Web site here. The deadline to submit an idea is September 5.

A new $256 million laboratory for stem-cell research at UC Berkeley will feature a sod roof, sunshades and rely on lots of natural light to save energy. It will more than double the square footage of now-demolished Warren Hall, which formerly housed the university's School of Public Health, but retain the old building's footprint. |

Students name CED professor recipient of Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching
Last month, UC Berkeley students named Ananya Roy, CED city and regional planning associate professor, the recipient of the Golden Apple award for excellent teaching. Students surprised Roy in one of her classes to announce the award and she gave a public lecture in addition to receiving a cash prize. A video of Roy's lecture can now be viewed on the Golden Apple Web site or on the UC Berkeley Web cast page. |
