LECTURE - LOCALS: A Regional Practice Engages Communities in Conceptually-based Projects

Kevin Conger is one of three founding partners of CMG Landscape Architecture, along with Willett Moss and Chris Guillard. New Mentorship Program Website
CED has launched the new website for its Mentorship Program. Now students and mentors can now match themselves by browsing profile pages in an online listing all of the program's participants. This online mentorship program allows student and mentors to decide for themselves whom they want to be matched with and eliminates an extensive period for application review by the CEDA. Law schools at UC Berkeley and UCLA launch new environment blog, UC Berkeley News, 11 March 2009
The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Berkeley Law) and UCLA School of Law today announced the launch of a new blog, Legal Planet, which provides insight and analysis on climate change, energy, and environmental law and policy. This collaborative blog draws upon the individual research strengths and vast expertise of the law schools' think tanks and legal scholars. Check out Legal Planet.

Candidate for sustainability director, 3 March 2009
CED Professor Emeritus Sym Van der Ryn is a finalist for Portland State University's Center of Sustainable Processes and Practice. Van der Ryn spoke to a group of about 40 people in Smith Center Memorial Union earlier this month about why he wants to come to Portland and his vision for the director's job. As a professor from 1961-1995, Van der Ryn helped shape the Bay Area's green architecture and sustainable design movement.

The Living...The Built...The McDonald's Parking Lot, The Where Blog, 6 March 2009
The Where blog recalls a speech by Spiro Kostof during his1987 commencement address to CED, in which he partly called for more piazzas. The author of the blog post discusses a MacDonald's parking lot that has become an unlikely vibrant public space, a piazza of sorts.

Ranch Houses: Living the California Dream, David Weingarten and Lucia Howard
A new book from authors Lucia Howard and David Weingarten details nearly thirty ranch homes in California. The authors, who are principals of Ace Architects in Oakland, along with photographer Joe Fletcher, illustrate the variety of the multifaceted form.

Steve Sharafian (B.A. Arch.’83) was recognized by AIA San Francisco for exceptional service to the architecture profession. Sharafian, whose wisdom has helped shape the architecture profession in our City, received a special achievement award from the organization.
