Design on the Edge: A Century of Teaching Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, 1903-2003, edited by Waverly Lowell, Elizabeth Byrne, and Betsy Frederick-Rothwell, is an engaging and thoughtful review of the first one hundred years of architectural education at UC Berkeley. The illustrated monograph of approximately 370 pages combines scholarly essays written by faculty about the development, contributions, and future of the program; reflections of faculty and alumni about their experiences here; a timeline/chronology; lists of key people and contributions; a color portfolio of a century of student drawings; and appendices of architecture faculty. It is intended for alumni, students, faculty, architectural historians, and the general public. During the first half-century, Berkeley's architecture department founders brought the traditional Beaux-Arts architectural education process to "the provinces" of the West Coast. In the second half-century, the department became an energetic and innovative force in architectural education nationally and internationally. William and Catherine Bauer Wurster established an architecture curriculum that became integral to the research university including design methods and processes, social factors, and a building-science program. Many influential architects have been associated with Berkeley's architecture department as either students or faculty or both. From this extraordinary mixture of pioneering architects and their diverse and broad views of design evolved the UC Berkeley Architecture Department, which influenced the direction of both the study and practice of design in the Bay Area and beyond. The purchase price of Design on the Edge is $65; however, CED is offering a pre-publication discount of $15 for book orders received before December 1, 2009. Proceeds support the Environmental Design Archives. |
