CED Commencement Print

CED's 2011 commencement ceremony occurred Monday, May 16, 2011, at UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre.

John Cary (M.Arch. '03) was the keynote speaker. Cary is author of The Power of Pro Bono: 40 Stories about Design for the Public Good by Architects and Their Clients, published last fall.

Cary's address to the graduates began with the following words:

I am going to challenge you to remember two things you already know:

The first is where you came from.

And the second is why you got into design in the first place.

Sounds pretty simple, no? Yet in life, as in design, the simple things are often the hardest to achieve.

Remembering where you came from and why you got into this work will be a struggle, but it’s one worth fighting for. In doing so, simply by keeping in mind these things you already know, I promise you’ll make a life that you can be proud of.

Congratulations to Zaw Lin Myat, who submitted the winning designs for the 2011 commencement program cover and the prizes/awards booklet cover.

Commencement Speaker

John Cary

John Cary (M.Arch., '03) has pioneered a career at the intersection of design and social change. His first book, The Power of Pro Bono: 40 Stories about Design for the Public Good by Architects and Their Clients, was published last fall and represents the culmination of his nearly seven-year tenure as executive director of San Francisco nonprofit Public Architecture. Under Cary's leadership, the 1% pro bono service program of Public Architecture leveraged an estimated $25 million in donated services annually. Cary has subsequently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Next American City, a quarterly magazine and national nonprofit focused on the future of cities. Cary is a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, co-recipient of the 2009 Designer of the Year Award from Contract Magazine, and a Resident of the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Northern Italy, among other honors. Cary earned a bachelor of arts degree in architecture, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota, and a Master of Architecture degree from UC Berkeley. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and ten-year resident of the Bay Area, Cary now resides in New York with his partner, author Courtney Martin.

Ceremony Sign-Up

Students must RSVP by the end of April in order to participate in the collegewide commencement ceremony. Undergraduates may sign up online after completing the graduation survey. Graduate students should RSVP with their department's student affairs officer. The commencement ceremony is held only at the end of the spring term. Students graduating in fall or summer terms are encouraged to participate.

Tickets

Students who have RSVP'd for the commencement ceremony will receive four complimentary guest tickets. Tickets are available for pick-up beginning Monday, April 25, in the Card Key Office (477 Wurster Hall, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.). Bring your student ID card. Additional tickets may be purchased from the Card Key Office. Tickets may be purchased with checks and money orders made out to "UC Regents" or with a Cal 1 Card. Cash will not be accepted.

Tickets will not be sold at the door. Every guest 10 years of age or older must have a ticket. Children under 10 may attend without a ticket. Early arrival guarantees the best seating.

Photography

Students should tell family and friends that due to space limitations, they will NOT be able to come close to the stage to take pictures. There will, however, be a professional photographer taking photos of graduates receiving their certificates. You may purchase these photos from Bob Knight Photo, (800) 261-2576. Bob Knight Photo is offering a $5 discount to students who register their email address prior to graduation. Click on the image/link to the right to register.

Transportation and Parking

The College of Environmental Design commencement ceremony will be held at the Greek Theatre. A limited number of paid parking spaces will be available in nearby lots. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional information, including other parking options, can be found by visiting the UC Berkeley Parking & Transportation website.

Disabled Parking: A limited number of spaces at the Greek Theatre will be available for purchase for those with disabled parking placards. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis to disabled patrons with certified handicap placards or license plates.

Regalia

The following information has been provided by the Cal Student Store. Contact them with any questions either in person at MLK Student Union or by calling (510) 642-9000 Ext. 681.

Cap and Gown Rental

  • Rentals begin at the end of March and continue throughout May.
  • Pre-ordering is not necessary.
  • Caps are one size fits all; gown size is determined by your height.
  • You keep the cap and tassel.
  • Rental includes gown, hood (for master's and doctoral students only), cap, and tassel with a 2011 drop-date.

NOTE: Since gowns are rented throughout May, most people can rent as late as the day of their ceremony. However, please allow for a half-hour wait in line, especially within the last three days, or go during the off-peak hours of the early morning or afternoon. Early rental is recommend.

You may be interested in ordering a Grad Pack. Grad Packs include everything you need for graduation (graduation announcements, thank you's, gown rental, cap and tassel, etc.). Order forms and samples are in the Cal Student Store. Grad Packs are available beginning at the end of March. Contact the store for information about shipping Grad Packs.

Graduation Stoles

Students have the option of wearing a UC Berkeley or ethnically-significant stole during the graduation ceremony. The UCB stole is a length of satin with a special embroidered UCB seal patch, and can be worn by any student to decorate the graduation gown. Especially nice for graduation pictures and regal-looking when worn in ceremony, the stole is available for purchase at the Cal Student Store.

The stole hangs around the back of the neck, with the two ends lying flat on the chest. Because of the fine satin, the stole tends to slip during heavy movement, so we recommend pinning the stole from the inside to the graduation gown. Stoles can be embroidered to include the name of a fraternity/sorority, student organization/club, sports team, or with "Class of 2011." Often stoles are given to the organization's seniors as a congratulatory gift. They can also be worn unembroidered with just the patch.

Honor Cords

If you are graduating with honors, you are eligible to purchase an honor cord to wear during your ceremony. You may purchase an honor cord beginning at the end of March. The honor cord is a double gold rope that hangs from your neck and dangles in front.

Grade-point average cutoffs and guidelines for undergraduate honors are posted on the CED undergraduate advising website.

Yearbook Portraits

Portrait sessions for the UC Berkeley undergraduate yearbook take place in February. If you are a senior and are interested in appearing in the yearbook, see the Blue & Gold Yearbook website for more information.
