The Judith Lee Stronach Undergraduate Travel Scholarships

Apply: How to Apply

The Judith Lee Stronach Undergraduate Travel Scholarships support the work of undergraduate students in the College of Environmental Design who are committed to social goals in the pursuit of design and planning. In their applications, students are thus expected to explain how the travel they wish to undertake will meet such goals, be it through service learning, community development practice or social architecture projects. They must also demonstrate a sensitive understanding of the organizations and communities with which they wish to work as part of this opportunity, and how such practice is embedded in complex cultural development. The JLS Travel Scholarships committee is currently accepting applications for summer 2013 scholarships. Applications will only be considered for travel during May 18–August 29, 2013.

Scholarship applicants must submit the following:

  1. JLS Travel Scholarships application form — international and domestic. Download the JLS Travel Scholarships application [.pdf].
  2. Scholarship proposal. Write a short essay (600–750 words) describing your personal and intellectual journey, explaining how this particular experience, through service learning, community development practice, or social architecture projects, fits into it. In your brief essay, please reflect on the approach to service learning assumed by your organization or planned trip.
  3. A detailed resume or curriculum vitae outlining relevant academic, co-curricular and employment experiences.
  4. Unofficial transcript (Bearfacts printouts acceptable; include other non-UC unofficial transcripts).
  5. Travel itinerary.

It is recommended that interested students speak to a member of the JLS Travel Scholarships committee about their ideas.
