CONNECT WITH A MENTOR/STUDENT

>>ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIP

To establish a relationship with a mentor or student, click on "Connect with a Mentor/Student" after you have logged in. This will take to a page featuring a list of all unmatched mentors or students. Click on a person's name to review their profile (a pop-up window will open). Once you have decided who you would like to be matched to, select your match by clicking on the radio button next to their name. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, enter your message to you match in the space provided, and click "Send Invite Email." Your potential match will be receiving an email requesting their acceptance of the match. Should they agree, you will then receive an email notifying you of their acceptance. Your match will also be indicated on your personal home page after logging in. Should they reject your request, you will then receive an email notifying you of their rejection. If this is this case, we encourage you to try another match, as there are still many eager mentors and students waiting to be matched.

If you are the recipient of a request for a match, you may either accept or reject it by logging in and reviewing their request on your personal home page. Options for either action will be listed next to the requesting person's information.

>>DISCONTINUE RELATIONSHIP

Discontinue a relationship first by notifying your match of your desire to break the match, explaining to them the reason for your actions so that they are not surprised to learn that your relationship has ended after logging into their account. Once you have personally expressed your need to end the match, log into your account and review your current matches on your personal home page. Click "Terminate Match," which is located next to you match's information, to officially end your relationship. You and your ex-match will then shortly receive an email informing each of you of the termination of your match.

>>GENERAL TIPS

  • Try to be as thorough and descriptive in your profile as possible. This will prove extremely helpful to students and mentors alike.
  • The CED Alumni Association Mentorship Committee sponsors at least one event per semester (usually a mixer) to help foster opportunities for students and mentors to get together. While this program is not a regular course, the mentor and the student typically meet at least three times during each semester.
  • The student should also visit the mentor's office to observe how professionals work in an office setting and learn more about the professional an business sides of the organization.
  • The mentor can give the student a desk critique at studio or, with the prior approval of the professor, participate in a mid-term review.
  • We also recommend that you plan at least one of the following per semester:
    • Meet each other at an architecture, planning, or landscape lecture series event.
    • Discuss the student's portfolio or a studio project presentation.
    • Review and revise the student's resume.
    • Arrange a guided visit to a construction job site.
    • Discuss job search strategies and job opportunities.
    • Discuss career objectives and how to achieve them.
    • Discuss alternative professional paths that may be open to the student with a CED education.
    • Meet at a museum or exhibition of interest to both.
    • Arrange a guided tour of another professional office.

These are merely a few of the many directions your relationship can take you. Remember, the nature of the relationship is determined by the student and the mentor. We realize that both students and mentors have busy schedules and simply ask that you do your best to make this relationship meaningful. If both parties can only find time to communicate through email, exchange messages as frequently as possible. Whether or not meetings are possible, it should go without saying that communication is key!
