Arcus Endowment Print

The Arcus Endowment was established in 2000 with a generous gift to the College of Environmental Design from the Arcus Foundation in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Endowment seeks to support a wide range of critical activities that explore the relationship between gender, sexuality and the built environment. Through its annual lectures and scholar-in-residence program, the Endowment seeks to foster an awareness of the role of Lesbian / Gay / Bisexual / Transgender / Queer (LGBTQ) communities in the history of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and the built environment disciplines. Its goals include efforts to combat homophobia, affirm the contribution of LGBTQ communities in education and professional practice; and help to place LGBTQ issues in a global context, through comparative studies and international collaborations. The Endowment also recognizes and supports the activities of LGBTQ students in the built environment professions.

Scholar-in-Residence Program

The Arcus Endowment is pleased to announce that its annual awards program has been replaced with a biennial scholar-in-residence program. Every two years in the spring semester, the new program will fund an outstanding scholar to join the CED community. In addition to advancing research on issues that are central to the Endowment's mission, the Arcus Scholar will also be expected to teach a graduate seminar and give a public lecture to the CED community. The award includes accommodation at the Weston Havens House, a modernist icon located in the Berkeley hills near the Berkeley campus. Candidates for the position will be selected through a national nomination process administered by the Arcus Endowment.
