The Berkeley Prize competition, established in 1998 with a generous gift from Judith Lee Stronach to the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley, aims to impress upon architects-in-training that the smallest act of building has global implications: that design can and does play a major role in the social, cultural, and psychological life of both the individual and society at large. The endowment sponsors an essay prize competition leading to two fellowship competitions — a travel fellowship and an architectural design fellowship, with a total of $9,500 awarded in prize money. Students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout the world may submit an entry. Deadlines are generally November for the essay competition and February for the travel and design fellowships.
